The leader of the opposition National Unity Party, Dr Lamin J Darbo, has issued a strong warning to what he described as individuals looting public funds, vowing strict punishment for anyone found guilty of corruption.

Speaking at a large political rally in his hometown of Gunjur, Dr Darbo told supporters that his leadership would prioritise transparency and accountability.

โ€œMy leadership will ensure transparency, but anyone found stealing or violating the laws of the country will be dealt with according to the law,โ€ he said, drawing loud applause from the crowd.

Dr Darbo, a UK-trained Gambian lawyer, entered the countryโ€™s political arena after resigning from the United Democratic Party (UDP) a few months ago.

He was among a group of senior UDP members who challenged the party leader, Ousainou Darboe, in a bid to lead the party into the 2026 presidential election.

He also responded to critics who have accused him of rushing his presidential ambitions, dismissing the claims as self-serving.

โ€œThose saying that Lamin J Darbo is in a hurry to become president do not love this country; they are only pursuing their own interests,โ€ he added.
