North America and Europe are the<br \/>\nmost popular destinations for citizens considering migration.<br \/>\nAs the world observes International Migrants Day (18 December), the Gambia and other<br \/>\nAfrican countries contend with \u201cbrain drain,\u201d high-risk irregular migration, and other<br \/>\nemigration-related challenges while also benefiting from remittances by citizens working<br \/>\nabroad.<br \/>\nKey findings<br \/>\n\u25aa More than two-thirds (68%) of Gambians say they have considered leaving their<br \/>\ncountry, a 12-percentage-point increase compared to 2018 (56%) (Figure 1). The<br \/>\nshare of citizens who say they have given \u201ca lot\u201d of thought to emigration has almost<br \/>\ndoubled, from 29% to 53%.<br \/>\n\u25aa Thoughts of emigrating are most common among part-time workers (83%),<br \/>\nunemployed citizens (80%), and those with post-secondary education (81%)<br \/>\n(Figure 2).<br \/>\no Young adults (75% of those aged 18-35) are more likely than older cohorts (37%-<br \/>\n70%) to consider emigrating.<br \/>\n\u25aa Among those who have considered emigrating, three in 10 (30%) cite the desire to<br \/>\nescape economic hardship or poverty, while a similar proportion points to the search<br \/>\nfor work opportunities (28%) (Figure 3).<br \/>\n\u25aa The most popular destinations for potential emigrants are North America (30%) and<br \/>\nEurope (28%) (Figure 4).<br \/>\nAfrobarometer surveys<br \/>\nAfrobarometer is a pan-African, non-partisan survey research network that provides reliable<br \/>\ndata on African experiences and evaluations of democracy, governance, and quality of life.<br \/>\nNine survey rounds in up to 42 countries have been completed since 1999.
