National Assembly has passed a landmark law aimed at protecting citizens\u2019 personal information and strengthening privacy rights in the country\u2019s rapidly growing digital sector.<\/p>\n
The Personal Data Protection and Privacy Bill 2025, approved during the Assembly\u2019s Third Ordinary Session, establishes the country\u2019s first comprehensive legal framework for safeguarding personal data.<\/p>\n
Information Minister Dr Ismaila Ceesay described the legislation as a \u201cmajor milestone\u201d in building trust in The Gambia\u2019s digital transformation.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis law will protect the privacy of citizens while supporting innovation and digital growth,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
The Ministry of Information thanked the National Assembly\u2019s ICT and Education Committee, members of parliament and technical teams for their \u201crigorous review\u201d of the bill to ensure it meets international standards while reflecting local realities.<\/p>\n
Civil society groups, development partners and other stakeholders were also credited for contributing to the drafting and refinement of the law.<\/p>\n
Officials said the government is now focused on implementing the legislation, raising public awareness, and strengthening institutional capacity to enforce data protection standards.<\/p>\n
